Five by Friday: Top Five Classic Video Games

Welcome to Five by Friday! If you haven’t heard, there’s a (admittedly terrible looking) video game movie called Pixels releasing this week. And while neither of us have any desire to pay for the movie, it got us talking about our top five favorite classic video games. Join us in the comments or on your own blog–we’ve even provided a graphic for you, which you can either save to your own space or link from tinypic using the HTML code below. Just remove the asterisks, and you’re all set!

  1. Okay, I’m completely old school. I loved the Atari. I wish I still had one, but I will buy one of those plug and play things. Okay, digressing. My top 5 games would have to be:

    5. Pole Position
    4.Chopper Command
    3.Pitfall
    2. Qbert
    1.Asteroids
Asteroids is my ALL TIME favorite game. I think I could play this for hours straight.

But I do have a runner up from the Playstation 2. Def Jam Vendetta’s Fight for New York.

  2. I’ve been thinking about this all day and it is HARD. But I’ve narrowed it down to:

    1. Link to the Past
    2. King’s Quest IV
    3. Super Mario Bros 3
    4. Mega Man 2
    5. Oregon Trail.

I had to discount non-story-based games because I don’t think they really influenced my attitude on gaming in any meaningful way (and I needed SOME reason to narrow the field), but I also played countless hours of SimCity and Tetris.

Also, I would like to give a shout-out to Day of the Tentacle, which was hugely entertaining and I still think of fondly, but was not what one would consider a “good” game.

    • I think I was less thinking about influences on my attitude towards gaming and made my list more about the games I could. not. stop. playing. But damnit, I regret not adding Kings Quest to my list as that was one of the first PC games I was obsessed with.

  3. This would be a lot easier if it was a top 20 list but since it’s only top 5 I’m going to cheat a little.

    1. Everquest – Directly influenced my GPA in college, and not in a good way.
    2. King’s Quest/Space Quest/Monkey’s Island – Basically any point and click game I could get my hands on after I got my first computer.
    3. Command & Conquer/Warcraft – Set the stage for RTS games
    4. Oregon Trail/Where in the World is Carmen San Diego – When 5.25 disk gaming was popular and my love for games began.
    5. The Legend of Zelda – One of the first games to own on Nintendo. Literally had a binder of graph paper labeling every square in the game by the time I finished it.

And since no one mentioned I couldn’t have an honorable mentioned section:

    1. Colonization which turned into the Civilization Series – Replay value at its best
    2. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – First game I played where actions changed the outcome of the adventure and had multiple endings and it paved the way for games like Mass Effect. Plus the obvious, Star Wars.

    • I’m a huge fan of SW:KotOR as well, but it came quite a bit later for me. If we did a favorites list with no implication of a time period on it, I’d be hard pressed not to include it!

I know quite a few people who lost some GPA points to Everquest, so you’re not alone.
