Welcome to the second installation of The Sorting Hat! This series was originally created because we enjoy sorting characters from other franchises as if they were starting their first year at Hogwarts with our friends, and this time we had such a great conversation about it that we decided to just clean it up for posting and put it up as-is. Sometimes it’s easy to sort someone, and other times (as you’ll see below) it takes compromise and campaigning.<\/p>\n

For this round of the Sorting Hat, we were joined by our dear friend Lauren, of The Housework Can Wait<\/a>. She’s as big a fan of Andy Weir’s\u00a0The Martian\u00a0<\/em>as we are, and we had a lot of fun sorting the Ares III crew together.<\/p>\n

Melissa Lewis<\/b><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Teija:<\/strong> For Lewis, I\u2019m leaning Slytherin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sarah:<\/strong> I think she is absolutely Slytherin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lauren:<\/strong> Me too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Verdict: Slytherin<\/b><\/p>\n

Rick Martinez<\/b><\/h2>\n

\"martinez\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Sarah:<\/strong> Martinez is a Gryffindor.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lauren:<\/strong> I was going to put Martinez as a Hufflepuff.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sarah:<\/strong> To pilot that ship, he\u2019s got to be brave.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lauren:<\/strong> No, he\u2019s got to be smart. It only takes bravery if he\u2019s scared to do it, which he\u2019s not. Martinez has two priorities the whole story: family and friends. To me, that\u2019s Hufflepuff.<\/span><\/p>\n

Teija:<\/strong> I think bravery has to do with doing something against some kind of personal odds that would require you to \u201cstep up,\u201d whether or not that is fear.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lauren:<\/strong> How much bravery does it take to do something you\u2019re not scared of, though? Martinez is military, and a pilot. The mission itself requires bravery, but his specific job of piloting the ship doesn\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sarah:<\/strong> Right, but I think it does because he knows going into it that if he screws up, it kills everyone on board.<\/span><\/p>\n

Teija:<\/strong> It\u2019s his job and he loves it, so I don\u2019t think it requires bravery or courage. He enjoys it, even if it\u2019s challenging. I mean, at one point or another, they each have an \u201cif this goes wrong, we all die\u201d moment. They\u2019re all exhibiting courage, I think the question is if that\u2019s a defining trait, or just one of many?<\/span><\/p>\n

Lauren:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s just one of many. Like they\u2019re all scientists, but not all Ravenclaw.<\/span><\/p>\n

Teija:<\/strong> Yes. And to me, Martinez being so loyal and putting his friends and family first makes him a Hufflepuff.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lauren:<\/strong> Same.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sarah:<\/strong> I\u2019ll concede.<\/span><\/p>\n

Verdict: Hufflepuff<\/b><\/p>\n

Beth Johanssen<\/b><\/h2>\n

Lauren: Johanssen is a Ravenclaw.<\/span><\/p>\n

Teija: Yes, absolutely. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sarah: Definitely a Ravenclaw.<\/span><\/p>\n

Verdict: Ravenclaw<\/b><\/p>\n

Chris Beck<\/b><\/h2>\n

Lauren: <\/strong>I think Beck is a quiet Gryffindor.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sarah:<\/strong> Same.<\/span><\/p>\n

Teija:<\/strong> I agree.<\/span><\/p>\n

Verdict: Gryffindor<\/b><\/p>\n

Alex Vogel<\/b><\/h2>\n

\"vogel1\"<\/a>\"vogel2\"<\/a><\/h2>\n

Lauren:<\/strong> Vogel and Watney are the tough nuts to crack.<\/span><\/p>\n

Teija:<\/strong> I just think we didn\u2019t get as much to work with for Vogel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sarah:<\/strong> I\u2019m leaning towards Ravenclaw, just based on what we know.<\/span><\/p>\n

Teija:<\/strong> Yeah, that or Hufflepuff. But probably Ravenclaw.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lauren:<\/strong> Well, we know Vogel has five kids, that he\u2019s German but is on a NASA mission, and that he\u2019s willing to go along with this mission but wasn\u2019t the first to volunteer. Which highlights loyalty and curiosity, but not bravery or recklessness. I lean Ravenclaw for Vogel, with a strong Hufflepuff secondary.<\/span><\/p>\n

Verdict: Ravenclaw<\/b><\/p>\n

Mark Watney<\/b><\/h2>\n

\"watney\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Teija:<\/strong> Watney, damn. Hard nut to crack, indeed. We know he exhibits traits from all the houses. Lots of Slytherin tones, plenty of Ravenclaw, plenty of Gryffindor. Maybe not so much of Hufflepuff.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sarah:<\/strong> I\u2019m leaning Slytherin for Watney too, or Gryffindor, though I acknowledge his intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lauren:<\/strong> I\u2019m leaning Ravenclaw, actually, even though he has strong tendencies toward the others, because of his instinct to work the problem under pressure. Sytherin is a strong possibility, but I think Mark\u2019s first instinct in a survival situation is to approach a problem with logic, not emotion. That is Ravenclaw.<\/span><\/p>\n

Teija:<\/strong> Hmm, that is true. \u201cI\u2019m going to science the shit out of this\u201d is definitely a Ravenclaw thing to say.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sarah:<\/strong> It is. But I also think his tendency to say, \u201cScrew you, NASA,\u201d leans a bit toward Slytherin. A true Ravenclaw would be open to all resources and suggestions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Teija:<\/strong> Not if they thought they knew better, though, which Watney does. The fact that he figured it out on his own and got exasperated when NASA started insisting he slow down and explain every little thing is pretty Ravenclaw, too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lauren:<\/strong> Yeah, I think a Slytherin would be a little quicker to point fingers away from himself. He\u2019s just a very brave, very funny Ravenclaw.<\/span><\/p>\n

Teija:<\/strong> I like it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sarah:<\/strong> Me too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Verdict: Ravenclaw<\/b><\/p>\n
