WARNING: Spoilers for <\/span>Captain America: Civil War,<\/span><\/i> Agent Carter<\/span><\/em>, Ant-Man,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Avengers: Age of Ultron<\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>ahead. Proceed at your own risk. <\/span><\/p>\n

Like many of you, we saw <\/span>Captain America: Civil War <\/span><\/i>on opening weekend, and haven\u2019t stopped discussing it since. While the internet is abuzz with speculation about the big questions raised by <\/span>Civil War\u2019s <\/span><\/i>somewhat open ending (where is Natasha? Are the inhabitants of the Raft going to be the basis for the Secret Avengers now? Is Bucky going to show up in <\/span>Black Panther<\/span><\/i>?), today we\u2019re going to focus on the small ones. These are the questions that may never be answered for certain (although we hope at least a few of them\u00a0will be someday), but are certainly fun to speculate about.<\/span><\/p>\n

1) Is Everett K. Ross related to General Thaddeus \u201cThunderbolt\u201d Ross?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

While the comics have never clarified the connection between these two characters (if there even is one), Marvel tends to be pretty deliberate about the characters they use in their movies and the names they drop. Bringing back General Ross (whose only appearance so far in the MCU has been in <\/span>The Incredible Hulk<\/span><\/i> back in 2008) in the same movie where they introduce Everett K. Ross (best known from the <\/span>Black Panther <\/span><\/i>comics) feels like more than a coincidence, and we won\u2019t be surprised at all if they turn out to be connected in some way.<\/span><\/p>\n

2) \u00a0Did a young Bucky Barnes attempt to flirt with Dottie Underwood?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Fans of <\/span>Agent Carter <\/span><\/i>may have perked up in the theater when, in a nostalgic exchange between Steve and Bucky, Steve mentioned Bucky spending \u201cthree whole dollars\u201d at a fair in an attempt to impress a pretty redhead. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat was her name?\u201d Bucky asked, a smile on his face.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDolores,\u201d Steve said, \u201cBut you called her Dot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

On <\/span>Agent Carter<\/span><\/i>, Dottie Underwood was a Soviet assassin and a product of the Red Room program, a precursor to the Black Widow program. While Dottie\u2019s hair was never exactly red, we find it hard to believe Marvel would just casually drop in a Dot that interacted with Steve and Bucky in the 1940\u2019s and have it <\/span>not <\/span><\/i>be a nod to Peggy Carter\u2019s neighbor-turned-nemesis-turned-frenemy. And while we don\u2019t know if this encounter between Bucky and \u201cDot\u201d was entirely coincidental (probably) or part of one of Dottie\u2019s nefarious schemes (probably not, but it would be interesting), one thing\u2019s for sure: we want to see the AU where Steve, Peggy, Bucky, and Dot go on a double date. <\/span><\/p>\n

3) What did Clint say to Scott to convince him to join Team Cap?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The final scene in <\/span>Ant-Man <\/span><\/i>is Scott getting word that Sam Wilson is looking for him, which happens at around the halfway point of <\/span>Civil War<\/span><\/i>. What this means is that the majority of <\/span>Ant-Man <\/span><\/i>is happening <\/span>at the same time <\/span><\/i>as the first half of <\/span>Civil War<\/span><\/i>, and that when Clint and Wanda go to recruit Scott Lang, not much time has passed for Scott since his sub-atomic victory over Yellowjacket. <\/span><\/p>\n

The problem? Scott\u2019s motivation throughout <\/span>Ant-Man <\/span><\/i>was to regain custody of his daughter, Cassie. So what did Clint\/Wanda\/Sam say to him that convinced him that flying to Germany to join Steve\u2019s rogue op was in his best interest? The simplest explanation seems to be that Sam left out a few details during his recruitment, and Scott was under the impression that joining the Avengers might actually <\/span>help <\/span><\/i>his case for Cassie. Then, once he arrives in Germany, there\u2019s definitely a degree of Captain America fanboying going on, which may explain why Scott goes along with the plan even after he knows they\u2019re \u201coutside the law\u201d… but it would still be interesting to know what\u00a0exactly was going on in Scott’s head.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4) Is Vision\u2019s fashion sense inspired by Edwin Jarvis?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When Vision was created in <\/span>Age of Ultron<\/span><\/i>, he was programmed using JARVIS-based codes. As anyone who has watched <\/span>Agent Carter <\/span><\/i>knows, Tony\u2019s cyber-assistant JARVIS is based on a real-life human from his past: his father\u2019s assistant, Edwin Jarvis. <\/span><\/p>\n

Now, we\u2019ve already seen in <\/span>Age of Ultron <\/span><\/i>that Vision is a copycat when it comes to fashion. And while he\u2019s not sporting a 3-piece \u201840s-style suit, it\u2019s easy to imagine that if Edwin Jarvis were alive today, his fashion choices would be very similar to Vision\u2019s in <\/span>Civil War<\/span><\/i>. Could it be that somewhere deep down in his programming, Vision is channeling the man behind the code? We certainly hope so.<\/span><\/p>\n

5) Who are Sharon Carter\u2019s parents?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Steve may have been surprised when Sharon revealed her connection to \u201cAunt Peggy\u201d at Peggy Carter\u2019s funeral, but we weren\u2019t. In the comics, it\u2019s well established that Peggy is Sharon\u2019s aunt. However, in the MCU, it\u2019s a bit trickier. We\u2019ve learned from <\/span>Agent Carter <\/span><\/i>that Peggy\u2019s brother Michael died during World War II, and that his death is what inspired Peggy to go be a field agent. However, it\u2019s heavily implied in <\/span>Agent Carter <\/span><\/i>that Michael is single, and no children are ever mentioned. Neither of them mentions another sibling, either. While it\u2019s possible that there was a (likely much younger, given Sharon\u2019s age) third Carter sibling hiding behind the scenes that no one ever mentions, or that Michael had a child, we\u2019re open to the possibility that \u201cAunt\u201d was more of an honorary title, and their actual relation is a bit more distant.<\/span><\/p>\n

6) When exactly did Natasha switch sides?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

During a pivotal moment in the airport fight scene, Natasha cuts off Bucky and Steve\u2019s exit — or so it seems, right up until she shoots and stuns T\u2019Challa, who was standing right behind them, and who was (supposedly) on her team. After Bucky and Steve escape, Natasha shrugs. \u201cI said I\u2019d help you find him, not catch him,\u201d she says about her promise to T\u2019Challa. \u201cThere\u2019s a difference.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier in the fight, Natasha and Hawkeye trade blows and quips, right up until Wanda blasts Natasha across the runway. \u201cYou were pulling your punches,\u201d Wanda says in explanation. And it\u2019s true — neither one of them was giving that fight their all. <\/span><\/p>\n

So was Natasha as solidly Team Iron Man as she would\u2019ve had us believe, or did she switch over fairly early in the fight and simply wait for the opportune moment to make her move? Only she knows, but we have to admit, when she came over to join Team Cap, we cheered.<\/span><\/p>\n

7) Who texts Steve to tell him Peggy has died?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Early on, Steve walks out on a debate about the Sokovia Accords because he receives a text message that \u201cShe is gone. In her sleep.\u201d There\u2019s no name attached to the text, and it\u2019s clear based on Steve\u2019s reaction at the funeral that he had no idea of the relation between Sharon and Peggy. The other people who were close to Steve were in the room with him, so who was with Peggy, waiting with Steve\u2019s number in their phone? One simple explanation is that Steve has visited her enough while in hospice that he\u2019s gotten to know her family, which would also explain why he\u2019s a pallbearer at her funeral. <\/span><\/p>\n

Now if you\u2019ll excuse us, we\u2019ll just be over here weeping softly at the mental image of Steve sitting at Peggy\u2019s bedside, reading stories to her grandkids. <\/span><\/p>\n

8) Do Natasha and Bucky have a history?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

During the fight scene in Berlin after Bucky is triggered by Zemo, Bucky pins Natasha down by the throat and she chokes out, \u201cYou could at least recognize me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This is an interesting line, because as far as we know, in the movies, Natasha and Bucky don\u2019t know each other. While Natasha was by Steve\u2019s side for most of <\/span>The Winter Soldier<\/span><\/i>, her only interactions with Bucky were in fight scenes. In <\/span>Civil War<\/span><\/i>, they mention that they\u2019ve been looking for him for two years and haven\u2019t gotten anywhere, and when Bucky is captured, it\u2019s War Machine and Black Panther that help bring him in, not Natasha. <\/span><\/p>\n

So why would Natasha expect Bucky to recognize her, especially in his triggered state? One explanation is that she <\/span>does <\/span><\/i>meet him sometime after he\u2019s captured, although that doesn\u2019t seem highly likely, considering the kind of security around him. Another is that she actually met him <\/span>before <\/span><\/i>the events of <\/span>Winter Soldier<\/span><\/i>, which is why she is able to tell Steve who he is after he attacks Fury. This could be a nod to the comics, where Natasha and Bucky not only have a shared professional history, but were also romantically linked. We\u2019ll probably never get the full story of how the Black Widow and the Winter Soldier know each other in the MCU, but one thing\u2019s for certain: there\u2019s more to both of them than meets the eye.<\/span><\/p>\n

ETA: Some have brought up that Natasha says in\u00a0Winter Soldier\u00a0that Bucky shot her in the stomach, and that is why she expects him to recognize her. But to us, the way she delivers the line in\u00a0Civil War\u00a0seems to imply a more personal connection, not simply that he should recognize a past mark. If anything, if their only connection was a failed assassination attempt, drawing attention to it at this moment might\u00a0only serve to reinforce Bucky’s determination to kill her. So while we absolutely allow for the possibility that their connection is somehow tied into that pre-Winter Soldier encounter, we are firm in our belief that there is a lot more to the story.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

9) Who did Peggy Carter marry?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

We get why the MCU didn\u2019t answer this question in <\/span>Civil War <\/span><\/i>(and probably never will). The bittersweet star-crossed love story between Steve and Peggy was one for the ages (literally), and even though we know that Peggy eventually married and had children, it may make it a little too real for the fandom if we\u2019re actually confronted by Peggy\u2019s flesh-and-blood husband. However, especially for those of us who have watched all of <\/span>Agent Carter<\/span><\/i>, we have a vested interest in knowing who she winds up with. Civil War\u00a0<\/em>had a prime opportunity to answer that question during Peggy’s funeral, but chose to sidestep it instead.\u00a0The most likely candidate is Daniel Sousa, whom we last saw locking lips with Peggy in the <\/span>Agent Carter <\/span><\/i>season 2 finale, but if not him, at least we know that the man she picks is worthy. Because, as we\u2019re all aware, Peggy knows her value. <\/span><\/p>\n

10) Did Hawkeye come out of retirement not out of loyalty to Cap, but to Quicksilver?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Okay this isn\u2019t technically a question because we all know the answer is yes. Hawkeye sticks to his guns about his retirement twice before he ultimately joins the fight, and when he does, it\u2019s to rescue Wanda from her imprisonment in the Avengers compound. After that, Hawkeye sticks close by Wanda\u2019s side, and at one point mentions that he\u2019s there to repay a debt. It\u2019s pretty evident that Pietro\u2019s sacrifice is still front and center in Clint\u2019s thoughts, and that he believes he owes Wanda for her brother\u2019s life. There wasn\u2019t much mention of Quicksilver made in <\/span>Civil War<\/span><\/i>, but Hawkeye\u2019s presence speaks volumes about his importance. <\/span><\/p>\n
